Description
Here is a nearly mint condition 1979 Fender Precision Bass in original 3 tone sunburst with a rosewood board.
The finish on this bass is classic 3 tone sunburst with that lovely black browning effect going into the red of the burst. Looks wise it is stunning and the body is made from two pieces of straight grained ash body. I have always favoured ash for my bass guitars for one simple reason; due to the wood density it has better sustain characteristics. This bass does not disappoint in the sound department as it delivers a fat and punchy bass tone.
Dating Fenders from this transitional period of 1979 to 1980 is always difficult. This bass has the S8 serial number with a neck date of 1979 and the pots dates also of 1979. The pickups have black bobbins which would again point to 1979 but it is possible that these have been changed at some point. They measure 10.8k the same as my mid-seventies Precision Basses which may be why this bass sound so fat and punchy. The other great feature of this bass is that it has a very hard maple neck which is like the necks from the mid-seventies era. It also has a very dark rosewood board; again most rosewood from this era are lighter rosewood. The neck is straight with great playability and very fast and comfortable to play. The neck and dark rosewood board has no chips or dents so is in excellent condition. The body has a few edge chips and scuffs and has some chips on the bottom of the bass as per the photos. The frets show minimal wear and are in perfect condition.
Sound wise this bass has a very deep punchy sound with the tone control full up the bass has a very powerful percussive tone which is great for slap bass. The sound has excellent attack and has an even response over all the strings. If you roll the tone contol completley you any get a warm fat pumping bass sound which still retains that twangy edge. This bass has a really big bottom end punch which is deeper than most of my other Precision basses. I have found this an ideal bass for cutting through the mix in a Blues or Hard Rock band. If you looking for a great playing late 1970’s Precision that will cover all musical styles then this bass will fit the bill esisliy The bass comes with the original black Fender ABS case
