Description
The guitar was made in Gibson Nashville factory in the USA in 2001 and was a short production run that was to cater for orders as Gibson oversold from the 250 peice limited edition custom shop guitar of 2000. In 2000 Gibson custom shop produced a limited edition Pete Townshend SG special model with a production run limited to 250 pieces worldwide. It faithfully reproduced the 1969 SG special that Pete played onstage during Woodstock, The Isle of Wight Festival and the famous Live at Leeds album. The Custom shop guitar came with a few extra goodies such as a replica anvil case and was around £3,000 in UK. No surprise it sold out immediately, but this seemed to surprise Gibson. So to cater the demand created for this guitar in 2001 Gibson released the SG Special Pete Townshend signature guitar.
This guitar has all the features of Pete’s 1969 model and it is in the top 3 favourite guitars that I own.
The body and neck of the Pete Townshend SG are made of one piece mahogany. Compensated wrab-around stop-tailpiece, original Gibson P-90 Pickups, Chrome Hardware, Grover tuners, Cream binding on fingerboard with dot inlay and finished in classic heritage cherry.
The neck is slender and tapered and is a fast and a joy to play. The double cutaways, in conjunction with where the neck joins the body, allows for easy access to even the highest of the notes on the 22 fret neck. The neck has a bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot position markers. The headstock of the guitar has a Pete Townshend signature decal on the back of the headstock. The tuning pegs are Chrome aged Grover’s. The pickups are 2 black single coil soap bar P-90’s which is why I love this guitar as when this is played through a good valve amp it sounds immense. It is not the most expensive guitar I own but it is easily one of the best sounding and playing.
This guitar is in immaculate condition with only 2 blemishes in the last 16 years. The headstock has two hanging marks where the guitar has been hung up at home and one little dent on the neck under the 4th fret which does not affect the feel or playability. The guitar comes with the original Gibson brown case with “Pete Townshend” stitched into the black lining.
