2002 Fender Jazz bass 1962 reissue has all the exact vintage correct features of a 1962 slab board Fender Jazz bass. If I was going to order a custom shop Jazz bass then this would be the specification that I would order. The bass is finished in vintage 3 tone sunburst with 4-Ply tortoiseshell guard and Rosewood slab board neck with dot inlays.
I bought this directly on a recommendation from a well known professional bassist who told me at an after show party that the early Mexican relic jazz basses are the best playing and sounding Jazz basses in his collection and that he had been using one at the gig I had just seen. The early ones has all American parts and were assembled in America. The bodies and necks were finished in Mexico as labour was cheaper and they were then sent back to Fender in the USA for assembly. I spoke to a couple of Fender dealers who verified this and they said that early ones were the ones to buy but the common theme was “try finding one” as they rarely come up for sale.
So the mission was on and after several years of searching and trying various Mexican Jazz basses I uncovered the one you see before you now and added it to my collection.
This Jazz bass is from the 2nd year of production and has all the features that you would want from a vintage Jazz bass such as American made hardware, American vintage alnico cloth wired picks ups, vintage-style reverse tuning machine heads, American vintage jazz bass bridge.
The neck is a an ultra-slim “C”-shaped neck, 7.25″-radius rosewood slab finger board which has a warmer sound than the laminate boards, 20 vintage frets with a synthetic bone nut. The rear of the neck and the headstock are tinted to provide that vintage look and the neck and body is made from alder and the finish is vintage correct nitrocellulose lacquer. The finish shows very minimal play wear and has no chunks out of the finish. The body minimal scuffs on the front and has no buckle rash marks on the rear of the body as I have been very careful with this bass, even though it has been one of my main live basses. The neck has no unplayable chips or dings in the neck. The frets show minimal wear and are in perfect condition. The neck is straight with a very low fast action and is very comfortable to play.
Sound wise this is a warm and fat sounding Jazz bass. It has a very even tone from both pickups and can provide anything from a deep warm classic vintage Jazz bass sound to a modern edged funky slap tone. The bass is light weighing just 9.5 lbs and is very resonant when played acoustically. For the price I do not think you will find a better looking or sounding Jazz bass and the bass comes with both covers and a gig bag.
